FireHorse Facility Featured on News 10 ABC Following Fatal Saratoga Barn Fire
Unbridled Sanctuary's Founder Interviewed by ABC News 10's Tyanna Xavier Regarding New Barn Fire Safety Initiatives
Greenville, NY (July 13, 2026) - In June, a devastating barn fire in Saratoga, New York claimed the lives of 17 Standardbred horses, underscoring a harsh reality across the equine industry: when a barn fire breaks out, time, visibility, and safe handling conditions disappear fast. In the wake of the tragedy, News10 ABC reported on the heightened urgency around barn fire safety and traveled to Unbridled Sanctuary in Greenville, NY to speak with staff about the measures they are taking to protect horses in their care. As an accredited organization by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, Unbridled is held to rigorous standards—including documented safety planning and evacuation readiness. FireHorse Rescue, which features firefighter and equestrian designed solutions to barn fire safety and horse evacuation, was featured in the News10 ABC story as part of the Sanctuary’s proactive approach to preparedness.
Xavier interviewed Unbridled Sanctuary's founder, Susan Kayne, on their new partnership with FireHorse. Months before the fatal fire in Saratoga, Kayne and her team deployed FireHorse Rescue Kits and extinguisher supplements in their barn. FireHorse's products are all-inclusive, firefighter and equestrian designed barn fire safety and horse evacuation tools, and are now protecting the more than 60 horses, donkeys, and mules rescued by Unbridled Sanctuary. FireHorse's goal is to keep the equines and their stewards sleeping soundly, and Kayne & Xavier highlighted the Kit's easy to install, highly accessible, and easy to use tools, including FireHorse's Equine Blindfolds, spot fire sprays, gloves for handling overheated metal latches or doors, glass breaker, fire blanket, 2000 lumens flashlight, smoke mask, and custom created, weather resistant case to keep all of the items functional, protected, and easy to access. The Kits provide day-to-day security for the Sanctuary’s more than 60 equine residents — horses, donkeys, and mules — rescued from slaughter, neglect, and abandonment.
Unbridled Sanctuary’s mission centers on providing lifelong care, stability, and protection for equines who have already endured uncertainty and trauma. The partnership reflects a shared commitment: ensuring that rescued animals not only survive, but live with the safety, calm, and security they deserve. This dovetails beautifully with with mission of FireHorse Rescue, which aims to put real-world tools into the hands of equestrians to prevent barn fire and emergency related tragedies.
Following the Saratoga fire, the state’s Gaming Commission now requires racetracks to have functioning smoke, fire, and heat alarms in barns. But the state’s Humane Association has said more is needed, calling for mandatory automatic sprinkler systems and additional measures to better protect horses and the people responsible for them.
While policy changes can take time, the News10 ABC feature highlights a parallel reality for barns and equestrians everywhere: preparedness also depends on what is staged on-site (and how it matches a facility's budget), how quickly it can be accessed, and whether it can be used by anyone in the moment.
